Italian Greyhound

A small, fine-built Italian sighthound with a smooth coat and flowing outline. Gentle handling and close companionship matter for this lightly built dog.

Appearance & size

The body is lean and muscular, with a curved line from the chest toward the tucked-up underside. An arched neck, slightly arched back and long fine tail contribute to the flowing silhouette.

Typical behavior

Many Italian Greyhounds seek close contact and enjoy curling beside their people.

Activity

Curiosity may lead some dogs to investigate gaps or dig beneath boundaries. An apparently enclosed space therefore needs checking rather than being accepted on appearance alone.

Care

Gentle handling is important, particularly around children who may not be coordinated enough to lift a small dog safely.

Italian Spinone

The Italian Spinone is a solidly built Italian gundog with a coarse-haired working background. Its long head and substantial frame distinguish it from superficially similar wirehaired sporting breeds.

Appearance & size

The frame is approximately square, strong-boned and muscular, with a notably long head. Male heights are 59–69 cm and female heights 58–64 cm.

Coat

Coarse hair and facial furnishings reflect the breed's working background.

Typical behavior

Many Spinoni are gentle with familiar people and sociable with dogs, though individual introductions still matter.

Activity

Regular walks with access to a modest garden can suit the routine described.

Care

Supervision around children remains necessary despite the favourable description of patience.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small working terrier developed in connection with fox hunting. Its compact scale can disguise a substantial appetite for activity and engagement.

Appearance & size

The body is lean, sinewy and slightly longer than tall, with a relatively deep rather than broad chest. Ear carriage, an alert face and tail carriage contribute to its recognisable expression.

Coat

White is the principal colour, with black and/or tan markings in differing patterns. The hair is described as dense and harsh.

Typical behavior

Many Jack Russells learn readily and enjoy social activity, while also being restless when there is little to do.

Activity

Regular exercise, play and useful engagement are central themes. The small body should not lead an owner to plan only a minimal activity routine.

Care

Regular brushing is the basic coat-care routine given, including for broken and rough coats. Secure fencing and enough occupation are equally important practical requirements.

Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin is a small companion dog with a silky coat and a distinctive, short-muzzled face. It has a long association with courtly households.

Appearance & size

The dog is compact, with a relatively large rounded head, dark eyes and a short, broad muzzle. The heavily furnished tail is carried over the back.

Coat

The coat is abundant and silky, with black or red markings on white. Long tail hair produces a plume over the body.

Typical behavior

Many Chins are lively, inquisitive and gentle in household interactions.

Activity

Shared play offers opportunities for movement and companionship. Let the individual dog's interest guide participation.

Care

The silky coat usually needs weekly brushing. Bathing frequency depends on the dog’s surroundings and how dirty the coat becomes.

Japanese Spitz

The Japanese Spitz is a companion breed developed in Japan, with a profuse white coat and sharply contrasting dark facial features. Many are responsive and interested in household company.

Appearance & size

The body is firm and flexible, with upright pointed ears, a tapered muzzle and a plumed tail carried over the back. The sturdy impression is emphasised rather than an extremely delicate toy outline.

Coat

The coat is white and stands away from the body, creating a fuller silhouette. Dark eyes, nose, lips and eye rims provide contrast.

Typical behavior

Many Japanese Spitz are interested in learning and prefer being near their people.

Activity

Regular walks suit the activity pattern described. Light, nimble movement and an energetic manner do not mean an owner must prescribe extreme exercise.

Care

Regular grooming removes loose hair and dirt, with extra attention useful during coat change. Shared time and appropriate occupation are further practical needs.

Many Kangals are independent, vigilant and closely attached to familiar people.

Coat

Straight, harsh outer hair sits over a soft, dense undercoat. Some areas carry longer hair, adding to the substantial outline.

Typical behavior

Many are persistent hunters and independently minded despite working in cooperation with a handler.

Activity

Regular walks and play are the home activities described, alongside the working interest in hunting.

Care

Affection and good handling can support a relationship, but they do not erase independent hunting motivation.

Kerry Blue Terrier

The Kerry Blue Terrier is an Irish working terrier whose soft, wavy coat changes colour as it matures. A muscular, relatively square body sits beneath that coat.

Appearance & size

The furnished coat can soften the visual outline without replacing the underlying substantial frame.

Coat

The hair is soft and wavy. Puppies begin black, with the coat changing over time toward grey-blue shades that can range from light silver to darker gunmetal.

Typical behavior

Many Kerry Blues are attached to their household, interested in play and alert to their surroundings.

Activity

Walks and fetch are the exercise examples offered. Activity should therefore be combined with useful engagement and suitable toys, rather than assuming a yard will entertain the dog indefinitely.

Care

Weekly brushing is the grooming routine described. Pet coats may be clipped by a groomer, while a retained beard and moustache need regular cleaning.

King Charles Spaniel

Known in some contexts as the English Toy Spaniel, this small companion has a short face and a rounded head. It is distinct from the larger, longer-muzzled Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Appearance & size

The body is small and compact, with long hanging ears, large dark eyes and a domed head. Its head and shorter face help distinguish it from the Cavalier rather than treating the two names as interchangeable.

Coat

The hair is silky and can be slightly wavy. Four colour descriptions are given: black and tan, tricolour, Blenheim and ruby.

Typical behavior

Many are friendly and comfortable in close household company.

Activity

Some participate in obedience, illustrating that a lap-oriented home role need not exclude learning.

Care

Small size does not justify rough play, and introductions to other animals need individual attention.

Komondor

The Komondor is a large Hungarian-associated guardian breed with a striking ivory corded coat. Its working background is centred on protecting livestock and property.

Appearance & size

The frame is powerful and large, much of it concealed by long cords. Minimum shoulder heights are 70 cm for males and 65 cm for females.

Coat

The coat is ivory. Puppies begin with softer, fluffy hair; as they mature, the softer underlayer and coarser outer hair combine into cords.

Typical behavior

Many Komondors are watchful, territorial and inclined to assess unfamiliar situations independently.

Activity

Observation and movement around the guarded area are the working activities described.

Care

Forming cords need separation so that neighbouring sections do not merge into a single mass. The coat therefore requires active maintenance despite comparatively little loose hair once mature.

Typical behavior
