Oriental

A slender Siamese-related breed family with a wide range of coat colors and both short and long coats.

Appearance & size

A long, fine-boned yet muscular body, elongated wedge-shaped head and large ears create the characteristic outline. The short coat exposes the long tapering tail, while the longer form has a more feathery plume.

Coat

The family includes short close-lying coats and finer semilong coats, with many colors and patterns. Oriental Longhair and Oriental Shorthair are explicit coat relationships, not merely alternate spellings of the same registration code.

Typical behavior

Vocal, affectionate and strongly people-centered cats that often want to participate in everyday activities.

Activity

Shared hunting games, learning opportunities and safe climbing places suit the described curiosity. A person-centered cat may benefit more from responsive play than from toys left permanently unattended.

Care

For everyday care, consider gentle weekly grooming, choosing a tool suited to the short or longer coat. Minimal undercoat generally simplifies maintenance, but long tail and body furnishings still need inspection.

Persian

A substantial longhaired breed known for a rounded head, short body and abundant coat. Facial cleanliness and thorough coat maintenance are important everyday commitments.

Appearance & size

A cobby body with broad chest, muscular torso and short substantial legs. The head is rounded, with large round eyes and comparatively small ears.

Coat

The long, full coat creates a substantial grooming commitment.

Typical behavior

Breed accounts commonly describe affectionate, relatively quiet and settled companions.

Activity

Offer accessible toys and comfortable routes to observation and resting places. Use short, responsive games suited to the animal’s comfort rather than assuming the plush outline means complete inactivity.

Care

Comb thoroughly and regularly to prevent tangles and mats. Gently keep facial areas clean and avoid pulling tight mats near the skin.

Peterbald

A slender Russian breed developed from Don Sphynx and Oriental Shorthair ancestry, with coat coverage ranging from absent to retained hair. Its oriental-type body distinguishes it from the more substantial Don Sphynx and Canadian Sphynx.

Appearance & size

A slender oriental-type body has long limbs, large ears and a tapering tail.

Coat

Some initially coated cats lose hair with development, while straight-coated individuals can retain it.

Typical behavior

A moderate vocal tendency is also mentioned.

Activity

Provide shared play, safe climbing and opportunities for exploration suited to the individual. Their slender build and socially interested description make both movement and companionship relevant.

Care

Hairless or sparsely coated individuals need attention to skin condition and environmental comfort rather than an assumption that grooming disappears. Coat form and actual skin needs should guide individual advice.

RagaMuffin

A large, soft-coated domestic breed related historically to the Ragdoll but developed and registered separately. Its broad range of colors and its distinct head and eye description support retaining its own profile rather than treating the name as a spelling variant.

Appearance & size

Medium to large cats with substantial bone, a rounded modified-wedge head, prominent whisker pads and large walnut-shaped eyes. The dense longer coat contributes to the full outline.

Coat

The coat is full and silky, with many colors and patterns, with or without white. Its coat is not simply the Ragdoll color scheme under another name.

Typical behavior

Many are gentle, affectionate and interested in household company.

Activity

Provide interactive games and stable climbing or resting equipment sized for a substantial adult. Gentle companions still benefit from opportunities to chase and explore.

Care

For everyday care, consider combing with a long-toothed comb once or twice weekly, describing a coat that can resist tangles better than its fullness suggests. Actual texture and friction areas should guide extra attention.

Ragdoll

A large, blue-eyed pointed breed with a silky semilong coat and a generally gentle reputation. The name does not mean every individual goes limp when lifted, nor that the breed has reduced sensitivity to discomfort.

Appearance & size

A broad chest, long muscular body and substantial bone. A modified-wedge head and oval blue eyes accompany the soft outline.

Coat

The semilong coat is silky and has relatively little dense undercoat. The coat can appear especially light when young, so age-related color development should not be mistaken for a fixed adult color description.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are affectionate, calm and sociable cats that can remain interested in play.

Activity

Offer hunting games, comfortable climbing routes and equipment suited to a larger adult. A quiet manner is not a reason to omit play.

Care

For everyday care, consider combing once or twice weekly to remove loose hair and tangles, with seasonal shedding affecting needs. A lighter undercoat can simplify maintenance compared with some longhairs, but does not make the cat free of loose hair or matting.

Russian Blue

A graceful blue-gray shorthair with a dense silver-tipped coat and green adult eyes. Its reserved-looking elegance differs from the broader British Shorthair and the woolly-coated Chartreux, despite their overlapping blue coloration.

Appearance & size

A fine, graceful muscular outline accompanies green adult eyes and a dense blue-gray coat.

Coat

The short double coat is dense and plush, with silver-tipped hairs producing the luminous appearance. Blue is a gray dilution color rather than literal blue pigment.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are intelligent, observant cats that can be affectionate with familiar people and more cautious about unfamiliar circumstances.

Activity

Interactive games, puzzles and secure observation places suit the described attentiveness. Give a cautious individual time to explore a new object before insisting on play.

Care

Inspect the dense coat during shedding and adjust attention to the individual.

Scottish Fold

A domestic breed known for forward-folding ears and a rounded outline. The folded-ear trait is linked with a cartilage and bone disorder, making welfare an important consideration alongside appearance.

Appearance & size

A medium-sized cat with rounded head, eyes and body contours. Folded ears sit close to the head, but straight-eared individuals also occur within the breeding population.

Coat

Short and longer coats occur within the family. Coat length does not change the distinctive folded-ear relationship.

Typical behavior

Relatively settled, affectionate home companions that can enjoy play without constant demands for attention.

Activity

Offer comfortable access to resting places and play suited to the individual’s mobility. Do not force jumping or athletic demonstrations.

Care

Short coats need regular gentle grooming, and longer coats may require more attention to tangles.

Selkirk Rex

A substantial curly-coated breed with rounded features and thicker coat texture than many other Rex cats.

Appearance & size

The body is medium to large, muscular and solidly boned. A round full-cheeked head, prominent whisker pads and round eyes create a soft expression.

Coat

Short and long forms have substantial coats with individual curls rather than a uniform close wave. Longhairs can have fuller ruffs and tail plumes.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are affectionate, socially interested and often relatively settled companions that still enjoy chasing toys.

Activity

Interactive games and comfortable observation places can suit a cat more interested in participation than constant athletic display. Provide movement and exploration without assuming that a sturdy body means low ability.

Care

For everyday care, consider gentle management of the curls and periodic combing to remove loose hair and prevent tangles. Longer coats can need additional work where curls gather into clumps.

Siamese

A blue-eyed pointed breed descended from cats of Thailand, traditionally called Siam. Modern pedigree accounts emphasize a long, refined body and expressive social behavior, while related Thai cats preserve a different registered presentation of the shared heritage.

Appearance & size

The modern long and muscular, with a wedge-shaped head, large ears, fine limbs and a long tapering tail. Almond-shaped blue eyes are characteristic.

Coat

The coat is short and close-lying, with darker face, ears, legs and tail against a paler body. The pattern is temperature-sensitive.

Typical behavior

Breed accounts emphasize vocal communication, attachment and interest in participating in household life.

Activity

Shared toys, climbing and reward-based learning can suit the described intelligence and people-interest. A socially engaged cat needs more than decorative equipment that it never uses.

Care

Gentle hand grooming or a soft rubber brush removes loose hair. Short hair simplifies upkeep but does not eliminate shedding.

Siberian

A substantial Russian semilonghair with a dense seasonal coat and rounded contours.

Appearance & size

A strong muscular body, broad modified-wedge head, developed muzzle and furnished ears create a substantial but balanced outline. A full winter coat can exaggerate apparent bulk, so body condition cannot be determined from coat volume alone.

Coat

The dense layered coat changes with season, becoming fuller during cold weather and lighter in warmer months. Rear-leg, underside and tail furnishings can conceal tangles.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are intelligent, investigative and socially engaged cats, often with an interest in cupboards, toys and household activity.

Activity

Provide sturdy climbing and observation places, hunting-style games and safe opportunities to explore. A seasonal coat should not determine whether play is offered.

Care

Check the underside, tail and rear furnishings for tangles. Adapt combing to actual texture and seasonal shedding.

Singapura

A small, muscular breed with a sepia ticked coat, conspicuously large eyes and ears.

Appearance & size

The compact body is solid and muscular despite its small outline. A rounded head, broad-set large ears and expressive almond-shaped eyes contribute to the characteristic face.

Coat

The sepia agouti appearance, with alternating bands of color along individual hairs. Dark facial markings contrast with the lighter background.

Typical behavior

Extroverted, curious and playful cats that often want to investigate what their people are doing.

Activity

Provide toys, climbing places and shared games appropriate to the individual’s confidence. Their small body does not remove the need for mental stimulation or movement.

Care

Light regular combing removes loose hair from the short coat. Bathing is not automatically needed for every individual.

Snowshoe

A blue-eyed pointed breed with white feet and often a white facial marking.

Appearance & size

The body is medium-sized, firm and muscular, combining some substance from shorthair ancestry with a longer outline from oriental-related ancestry. It is neither an especially heavy cobby cat nor an extremely slender modern Siamese.

Coat

The coat is short, with darker points and white markings. The preferred exhibition appearance includes an inverted white V on the face and white foot markings, but pattern precision varies.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are affectionate, socially interested and generally gentle companions.

Activity

Shared play, learning games and comfortable climbing routes can suit the described social interest. A pointed coat does not mean every individual behaves exactly like a Siamese.

Care

Inspect and gently remove loose hair according to the individual’s condition. White areas do not justify excessive bathing solely to match an exhibition photograph.

Sokoke

A Kenyan-origin domestic breed with a lean athletic body and a distinctive blotched tabby coat. Its forest-associated name does not mean it is a wildcat or a domestic-wild hybrid.

Appearance & size

The body is medium-sized, long and relatively lean, with long legs and hind limbs longer than the forelimbs. The head is comparatively small, with eye color ranging from amber toward green.

Coat

The tabby pattern has contrasting blotches whose centers can appear ticked or hollow, producing the look sometimes called African tabby. The name describes a registered population, not a general label for brown patterned cats from Africa.

Typical behavior

Very active, climbing-oriented and vocal cats that can develop strong attachments to people and other cats.

Activity

Provide climbing opportunities, observation places and interactive hunting games. A lean cat associated with outdoor populations still needs safe, practical household enrichment rather than compulsory free roaming.

Care

Gently remove loose hair and observe coat condition during routine handling. A short coat does not mean that observation and upkeep are unnecessary.

Somali

A semilonghaired relative of the Abyssinian with a ticked coat and conspicuous plumed tail.

Appearance & size

The body is medium-sized, muscular and well proportioned, with a softly wedge-shaped head, expressive eyes and substantial ears. Fuller neck, underside and rear furnishings soften the outline.

Coat

Banded hairs create the characteristic ticked effect, with longer furnishings around the ruff, abdomen and rear legs. The coat should not be confused with a conventional strongly striped tabby.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are active, curious and affectionate cats that remain interested in exploring and participating in family life.

Activity

Offer climbing, interactive hunting games and safe opportunities to investigate. A playful cat may need a varied environment rather than one permanently available toy.

Care

Regular combing removes loose hair from the longer ticked coat. Watch for clumps when shedding or coat texture changes.

Sphynx

A Canadian-origin breed with greatly reduced hair, large ears and an expressive wrinkled appearance. It is separate from Don Sphynx and Peterbald, whose histories and inherited coat traits differ despite superficial similarity.

Appearance & size

A medium-sized substantial cat with muscular body, strong bone, conspicuous belly contours, large ears and lemon-shaped eyes. Wrinkles are especially visible around the head.

Coat

The skin may feel suede-like, and some fine hair can remain on areas such as the nose, ears or tail. Coverage can vary with season and development.

Typical behavior

Outgoing, curious and strongly people-interested cats that often communicate their wish for attention or food.

Activity

Provide shared play, safe climbing and warm resting choices. Opportunities to move and investigate are as relevant as for coated cats.

Care

Skin oils mean that grooming has changed rather than disappeared. Gentle washing and observation of skin condition are useful, with frequency adjusted to the individual.

Thai

A blue-eyed pointed breed organized to preserve a less extreme traditional Thai or early Siamese type.

Appearance & size

The body is medium-sized, muscular and moderate in bone, with a head shaped as a modified wedge longer than wide. Ears are proportionate rather than extremely exaggerated, and the eyes are large, oval and blue.

Coat

The coat is short and pointed, with darker extremities and a lighter body. Tabby and tortoiseshell point variations occur.

Typical behavior

Gentle, family-bonded, intelligent and communicative cats that enjoy involvement in daily life.

Activity

Shared games, reward-based learning and observation places can suit the described interest in people. A traditional appearance is not a reason to assume lower activity or reduced social needs.

Care

Gentle removal of loose hair and regular observation of coat condition provide straightforward everyday maintenance.

Tonkinese

A medium-built breed connecting Siamese and Burmese ancestry, often associated with the mink pattern and aquamarine eyes. Its registered identity is separate from both parent-related breeds rather than a temporary label for any first-generation cross.

Appearance & size

The body is muscular and moderate, neither especially cobby nor extremely elongated. A modified-wedge head, rounded muzzle and broadly based ears accompany the balanced outline.

Coat

The coat is short and silky. Aquamarine is especially connected with mink, but not every Tonkinese is expected to have exactly the same coat contrast or eye shade.

Typical behavior

Many individuals are intelligent, gregarious and interactive companions.

Activity

Provide responsive play, simple problem-solving opportunities and social contact. Comfortable climbing and observation places can support exploration without requiring outdoor hunting.

Care

Gentle periodic brushing helps manage loose hair. More attention may be useful during seasonal shedding.

Toybob

A small, compact domestic breed with a naturally shortened, kinked tail.

Appearance & size

The compact body is muscular and solidly boned despite its small size, with a broad ribcage, rounded muzzle and large expressive eyes.

Coat

Short and longer coats occur within this small bobtailed family.

Typical behavior

Many enjoy playful interaction and quiet time close to their people.

Activity

Offer play and climbing options sized to the actual individual, with secure access and opportunities to observe household life. Let the cat alternate games with rest.

Care

For everyday care, consider weekly grooming, with a brush for the short coat and a steel comb for the longer form.
