Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso is a Tibetan companion with a long coat and a history as an alerting dog. Its small stature sits alongside a relatively solid, slightly elongated frame.

Appearance & size

The body is slightly longer than tall, with hanging, heavily furnished ears and a tail carried over the back. Long hair around the head and body contributes to the distinctive silhouette.

Coat

The coat is long, with a central parting and abundant hair around the head. Gold, grizzle, slate, smoke and particoloured descriptions are given.

Typical behavior

Many Lhasa Apsos are attached to their family, playful and capable of independent choices.

Activity

Play and participation in the household routine provide shared engagement.

Care

A full coat demands substantial grooming, including regular brushing to separate tangled undercoat and maintenance between bathing sessions. The choice of length changes the maintenance routine; it does not make the need for ongoing care disappear.

The skin is abundant and loose, particularly on the head where it hangs in heavy wrinkles. The preferred coat colours are black, grey and leaden, but mahogany, fawn, fulvous, hazelnut, dove-grey and isabelline are also acceptable; all coats may be brindled, and minor white markings on the toes and chest are tolerated.

Activity

Moderate exercise and participation in household life suit the companion role. Adapt activities to the individual rather than assuming that giant size means no need to move.

Care
